"...FU-728B tube! This tube is the Chinese military version of the popular Eimac 4CX-1500B. The only difference is the filament voltage (9volt) and the center pin on the tube socket, which is about 1mm thicker. This tube is also 14mm higher and therefore better and more efficient cooling. The tube is still manufactured in China, readily available from Greenstone USA or sources in China. All Emtron amplifiers are using now these tubes with a modified socket, in order to accommodate the FU-728F as well as the Eimac 4CX-1500B tubes!! To change from one tube to the other, only filament tap on the transformer must be changed.
The reason that we changed to these tubes is twofold. The tubes are still being manufactured, and they are cheaper and more economical. If we want to manufacture amplifiers, we must plan ahead into the future, we must know, from where our vital components will come from!
The Russian GU-78 tube is extremely hard to get, and it cost over US$700 today. This is why some six years ago we changed from GU-78 to GU-84. Now the GU-84 as also expensive and hard to get, since these tubes are no longer manufactured. The Chinese tubes are still being made and they are excellent performers. We are extremely happy with them. More then ten years ago, we introduced the Russian tubes to the commercial amplifier market, and everybody followed! Remember, in one year time, everybody will be using Chinese tubes. Alpha in USA is already using the Chinese 4CX1000A in their amplifiers.
