Hi,
we are using the "rotary encoder mode" built into the STM32Fxxx timer peripheral modules. We already operate in full resolution mode (X4). I.e. every edge causes a step, which is in my opinion the reason why we sometimes see opposite direction changes if turning an encoder due to the increased noise.
So the only left to do for you is to de-detent your encoder. BTW, we measure for the tuning knob we measure the speed of the rotation rather than use each step an increment (this happens only if you turn very slowly).
