Hello Gary.
It’s good to hear from you… It’s has been awhile.
To answer your question, yes, eSSB is allowed here in the U.S. and it perfectly legal in all regards.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has no bandwidth limitations for SSB phone.
The A.R.R.L. (American Relay League) has petitioned the FCC on a few occasions to limit our SSB bandwidth to 3kHz, but has been turned down by the FCC every time!
The FCC has stated the importance of self-regulation and freedom to experiment within the amateur radio community as per FCC Regulation 97.1(b),(c), & (d) regarding the purpose of Amateur Radio.
Yes, there are amateur radio operators here in the U.S. that complain about wider bandwidths also, but their arguments have not been very compelling.
When eSSB is practiced responsibly with common sense and courtesy, it’s not a problem.
In fact, most eSSB operators have signals that are superior in cleanness with significantly less I.M.D. and spurious artifacts, occupying less bandwidth than their narrow counterparts with high distortion.
Best regards & 73,
John, NU9N
